How to Clean and Care for Watch Straps by Material

By James Alderton . 7 min read . Updated June 2026

Every strap material needs a different cleaning method, and using the wrong one is how people ruin a good strap. Water is the enemy of leather but the cleaning agent for rubber and nylon. This guide gives the correct process for the three materials you are most likely to own, plus the one tool that deep-cleans metal and rubber better than anything by hand. Remove the strap from the watch first with a Bergeon 6767-F Spring Bar Tool so you can clean it without risking the case or movement.

The short answer

Clean leather straps with a barely damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap, then condition; never soak leather. Hand-wash nylon NATO straps in mild soapy water and air-dry away from sunlight. Rinse rubber and silicone straps under fresh water with a little soap. For a deep clean of metal and rubber, use an ultrasonic cleaner, but never put leather in one.

Step 1: Remove the strap from the watch

Cleaning a strap while it is attached risks getting water or cleaning solution near the case seals and crown. Use a Bergeon 6767-F Spring Bar Tool to release both spring bars and take the strap off the watch first. If the strap is quick-release, like the Barton Quick-Release Genuine Leather Strap , slide the pin lever and lift it off with no tool at all.

Cleaning the strap off the wrist also lets you reach the buckle, the keepers, and the underside that picks up the most skin oil and grime.

Cleaning leather straps

Leather is the most delicate material to clean because water is its enemy. Start by wiping the strap with a dry microfiber cloth to lift loose dirt and dust. For deeper grime on smooth leather, dampen the cloth very lightly with water and a tiny amount of mild soap, work it gently over the surface, then wipe with a clean damp cloth and let the strap air-dry fully away from heat.

Once dry, apply a small amount of leather conditioner to keep the fibers supple and protected. Never soak a leather strap, and keep it out of the shower, pool, and ocean. A Hemsut Genuine Leather Watch Strap or a premium Crown and Buckle Shell Cordovan Leather Strap both last far longer with this light, regular care than with occasional aggressive cleaning.

Cleaning nylon NATO straps

Nylon is forgiving. Soak the strap in lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap, then lather it through the weave with your thumbs. For stubborn stains, scrub gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly in clean lukewarm water and air-dry in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight, which can fade the colors.

Avoid machine-washing, which can distort the weave and damage the hardware over time. A quality woven strap like the BluShark AlphaShark Nylon NATO Strap or a budget Hemsut Classic Nylon NATO Strap both clean up well with this hand method and come back soft.

Cleaning rubber and silicone straps

Rubber and silicone are the easiest materials to clean and the most tolerant of sweat, sunscreen, and salt. Rinse the strap under warm running water, apply a little hand or dish soap, and rub it between your fingers to lift dirt from the surface and the buckle holes. Rinse in cool water and hang it to dry away from direct sunlight.

For an FKM dive strap like the ZULUDIVER FKM Rubber Dive Strap used in salt water, a fresh-water rinse after every use prevents salt crystals building up in the buckle and ventilation channels. Avoid silicone-based cleaning sprays on silicone straps, which can leave the surface tacky over time.

Deep cleaning with an ultrasonic cleaner

For the grime that hand cleaning cannot reach, between bracelet links, inside strap holes, and in the crevices of buckle hardware, an ultrasonic cleaner is the most effective tool. The iSonic Ultrasonic Watch Strap Cleaner uses a 42kHz frequency to dislodge skin oil, salt, and residue without abrasive contact.

It is safe for metal bracelets, rubber and silicone straps, and metal hardware. It is not safe for leather straps or for any unsealed watch case, where water and ultrasonic vibration cause damage. Dry metal hardware fully afterward to prevent corrosion.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a leather watch strap in an ultrasonic cleaner?+

No. Ultrasonic cleaning and water exposure will damage leather, causing it to dry out, stiffen, and crack. Clean leather only with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, then condition it. Reserve the ultrasonic cleaner for metal bracelets and rubber or silicone straps.

How often should I clean my watch strap?+

For straps worn daily, a quick wipe-down weekly and a deeper clean monthly keeps grime and odor under control. Rubber and nylon straps worn during workouts or in salt water should be rinsed after every heavy use.

Why does my nylon strap smell after a while?+

Low-grade nylon absorbs sweat and skin oils that bacteria break down, producing odor. Hand-wash the strap in mild soapy water and air-dry it fully. If odor is a recurring problem in a humid climate, a waterproof silicone strap is a more practical choice for active wear.
